Smith joined the RAFVR in August 1938 as an aircrafthand, before retraining as an air gunner. He joined 219 Squadron in July 1940, he went to 141 Squadron on night-fighting operations until August 1941. He then applied to become a Navigator and trained in Rhodesia and South Africa. He returned to the UK in 1943 and joined 297 Squadron which dropped paratroopers and towed gliders during D-Day and Arnhem.
