The cover also shows the Distinguished Flying Cross awarded to airmen for bravery and gallantry. The cover bears bears 1st class stamp and 5 1/2p Sir Winston Churchill stamp cancelled with Duxford Cambridge DFC 15 September 2000 postmark.

Wing Commander James Sanders DFC was the third RAF pilot to fly the Hurricane while with No 111 sqn the first RAF unit to get the Hawker Hurricane and by the end of May 1940 he had over 1,000 hours on Hurricanes. A gifted pilot he amassed 16 victories and gained the DFC during the Battle of France, during he Battle of Britain he refused to leave 11 Group when 615 Squadron was rested, so he borrowed a Hurricane from No 253 Squadron before being specifically asked to lead a special Fighter Interception Unit. His Hurricane is shown on the cover artwork (615 Squadron Hurricane in foreground).
