Brown joined the RAFVR in August 1939 as a pilot. Called up on September 1, he completed his flying training in September 1940 and was commissioned next day. On the 16th he arrived at 7 OTU, Hawarden to convert to Spitfires. He was posted from there on the 28th to 611 Squadron at Digby. He moved to 41 Squadron at Hornchurch on 12 October 1940. On the 1st November Brown was with a flight of Spitfires that overshot Hornchich in poor wether and his aircraft hit a Barrage Baloon cable, seriously damaging his aircraft and forced to make a foced landing at Dagenham. He left the squadron in February 1941 and spent the remainder of the war in the timber industry.
