Petermann is a quite remarkable pilot in that he lost his arm after being hit by flak from Anti Aircraft guns yet succeeded in returning to front line flying and scoring four more victories with the aid of an artificial left arm. He was awarded the Knight`s Cross on the 29 February 1944 having scored 60 victories and was at the time recovering from his injuries. It appears that almost all Petermann`s activity was over Russia he also succeeded in sinking a gun boat and 50 troop ferries during a number of low-level attacks. Petermann flew throughout the war with JG 52 apart from a brief spell with JG 7 in April 1945.
