JS(CC)93e RAF cover dual numbered BB13 as part of our Battle of Britain Mini-Series. The cover artwork by Tony Theobald depicts four Hurricanes of No 501 Squadron flying om formation over the countryside surrounding RAF Kenley. The lead Hurricane is SD-A is that of the squadron Commanding Officer Leader 'Hulk' Hogan the Commanding Officer of the Squadron, SD-X was regularly flown by Pilot Officer Ken Mackenzie of 'Mackenzie's Knock' fame for which he won the DFC in 1940, SD-F was regularly flown by Sergeant 'Ginger' Lacey DFM one of the RAF's great aces and SD-N flown by Flying Officer 'Hawk Eye' Lee who later won the DFM. The Air Force Cross medal represents those awarded to Royal Air Force personnel for non-operational gallantry in the air.
The cover bears Hawker Hurricane / Lord Dowding Royal Mail stamp showing No 501 Squadron Hurricane 'SD-N' and is cancelled on 15 September 2000 which was the 60th Anniversary year of the Battle of Britain and also now known as Battle of Britain day. Uxbridge was where Fighter Command had their Headquarters. .
