SP(BB)47 Flight Lieutenant Ludwik Martel KW** VM(5th Class)

Martel arrived in England from Poland in early 1940. He was commissioned into the RAF in May before being transferred to the Polish Air Force in August. He joined 54 Squadron in September 1940 and moved to 603 Squadron at the end of the month and claimed a Bf 109 destroyed. He was posted to 317 Squadron in 1941. In 1942 he was a flying instructor, before returning to 317 Squadron in August. He went to Middle East to form the Polish Fighting Team, otherwise known as `Skalski`s Circus` which was attached to 145 Squadron. He returned to the UK and 317 Squadron in July 1943. Tour-expired, he was posted to HQ PAF on 12 September 1944.
