Clark joined 615 Squadron in 1938 as an Aircrafthand. Called up in 1939 he remustered as an airgunner before joining 219 Squadron in July 1940. He retrained as a Rader Navigator and he was awarded the DFM for scoring a number of night victories. In July 1941 he was posted to 1455 Flight with Turbinlite Havocs, before moving to 1451 Flight. After a short period as a Navigation/Radar Instructor he was posted to 488 (NZ) Squadron in May 1943.
